"The peak of tolerance is most readily achieved by those who are not burdened by conviction"  - Alexander Chase.

We Listen

First of all, we listen to your ideas.

We will always work to your bands needs, so it may help to understand some of the common recording approaches used at the studio.

The Live feel

Perhaps the most popular method. A  'live feel'  is achieved by the band being recorded together. Each persons  instrument is placed in a location where their own sound is isolated from the others. The instruments are recorded with one or more microphones. Typically the Drums are set up in the tracking room, guitar amp in the vocal booth and bass amp in the long room area. Other spaces are also available. The vocalist is given a stage microphone and all the band members play and sing in the tracking room with headphones providing the monitor mixes. Next, the vocals are recorded again  in the vocal booth using top quality condenser microphones. Any other overdubs are also added at this stage. This approach provides a very energetic feel. There is a human quality to the creation, often so lacking in many modern songs.

The Produced Approach

This option is for tech heads. Perfect recordings can be made by utilizing samples and grooves from any number of different sources. Piece them together and control the time line precisely using digital technology. Polished results are expected. But be warned, the art is knowing when a song is finished! With unlimited musical options you can go on forever - ending up with a tired product.

Top Tip for Computer Musicians

Here at Fitdog we pay attention to system reliability. Here is how we do it!

  • Use a dedicated music computer
  • Do not connect it to the internet - evil people insist on installing unwelcome programs, spyware and viruses on your machine.
  • Buy the most powerful computer available - that way you have the installation nightmares once and use the same machine for up to 3 years.
  • Never waste time installing games, trial or pirate software on your music computer - this is a recipe for computer hell with slow start-up and shutdown and general computer chaos. Anyone that does the above will know we are telling the truth.
  • Never delete anything - Always archive it off to DVD (or cd for small scale setups) create an archive log and store copies off-site
  • We use Pro-tools as it writes straight to disk and auto backups every 5 minutes. Any professional setup should do this!
