We Listen

First of all, we listen to your ideas.

We will always work to your bands needs and will always talk through the plan before we start the session. This way, you're involved right from the start.

Typically it takes around one hour to set up all of the microphones and connections ready for a sound check. This is an important part of the session as it's at this stage that the backbone of the final sound is defined.

Huge variation in sound is achieved simply by moving microphones, changing the location of amplifiers and by moving acoustic panels.

The Live feel

This is perhaps the most popular method of recording (and most productive time wise). A  'live feel'  is achieved through the band being recorded together. Each person's instrument is placed in a location where their own sound is isolated from the others. The instruments are recorded with one or more microphones. Typically the Drums are set up in  tracking room 2 (The drum booth), the guitar and bass amps in either the entrance area, tracking room 1 or the dead acoustic space. Other spaces are also available.

The vocalist is given a stage microphone and all the band members play and sing in the tracking rooms with headphones providing the monitor mixes. Next, the vocals are recorded again using top quality condenser microphones. Any other overdubs such as solos are also added at this stage. This achieves a very energetic and vibrant feel.

A sliding door separates the drum sounds from the other musicians, if required.

How many songs in a day?
bulletThere is no fixed rule as to how many songs can be recorded in a day. A typical average for a well rehearsed band is about 2 to 3.

How many hours should we book in a day?
bullet8 hours is about the optimum (excluding 1 hour lunch break). Really long sessions can result in tired ears and poor judgement at the mixing stages.
bulletIt is far better to span recording days. You can leave the gear setup for the duration of any consecutive days.
